Rebel Runners

Who are the Rebel Runners? They are a running group conceived and organized by Mike Lapp and Francine Robinson, local runners in the West Michigan community who have 17 years of combined experience leading a mentor program for the 25K Amway River Bank Run.  In 2019, the Rebel Runners focused on training new runners to complete the 5K and 10K distance. This year, Mike and Francine along with other experienced running coaches, will expand the program to include training for all of the Amway River Bank Run distances, including the 25K.   There is no cost to participate.

Are you a new runner? Do you have some experience but want to move up to the next level? Or, have you started to train in the past but struggled to follow through? Then this program is for you!  In order to make your training more fun and interesting, we will incorporate “theme” runs and other types of fun runs. We will be with you every step of the way. If you’re already an experienced runner but know someone who would benefit from this program, please pass along this information, or come and join us as a coach!

All aspects of running will be covered in our program—including the type of clothing that works well, the nutritional needs of runners, proper hydration, incorporating rest days, setting your pace, and the value of keeping a positive mental focus. Why the name "Rebel Runner"?

The coaches wanted a name that would represent "strength and boldness" to signify that taking the first step toward a new goal takes courage. When you make the commitment to choose healthy habits and lifestyles you are “rebelling” against inactivity and past choices that may have kept you from believing in yourself.  We believe you can do this.  Our motto is “YES, YOU CAN!”

Saturday Runs 

Training for the 2020 Amway River Bank Run has begun and will continue every Saturday morning leading up to race day on May 9, 2020.   All training runs begin at 8 a.m.

**NOTE On the first Saturday of the month we will be joining the Amway River Bank Run Community Runs at the David D. Hunting YMCA, 475 Lake Michigan Dr. NW, Grand Rapids, MI. Refreshments and networking follow the run. {Non-members of the YMCA park in Dash Lot 7)


With the exception of the first Saturday of each month, all other Saturday training runs will begin at 8 a.m. at the John Ball Zoo, in the northeast corner of the middle parking lot, across from the duck pond.  Come early for instruction and motivation!  (There may be some construction debris but parking spots are available)

Training Schedules

We will have weekly training schedules to guide you in your training for the 5K, 10K or 25K


Each week we will have out-and-back courses for various distances. Signs will be set out to indicate where you should turn around depending on your chosen distance.  B
